If you thought Spam was simply something unpleasant which arrives by email, think again. Over the past seventy-five years Spam has been a mainstay of many people's diets. The name comes perhaps from 'spiced ham' but no-one knows for sure, and it is made from pork and ham and five other ingredients. Hawaii residents formed a particular affection for this pressed meat in a can, with the annual Waikiki SPAM Jam Festival that has the involvement of some of Hawaii's top chefs who dream up new recipes for the old product. Even McDonald's in Hawaii features SPAM on its breakfast menu. Not to be outdone there's a museum of Spam in the unlikely city of Austin, Minnesota, and The Great American SPAM Recipe Challenge is held across the US annually.
To celebrate this milestone birthday, the makers of this classic have added two new flavours just to prove they are still hip and in touch with modern palates - Black Pepper, and Jalapeno - the latest of 14 varieties. Spam appears on shelves and tables in 44 countries worldwide. It has been phenomenally popular with the one-billionth can produced in 1959. The tally is now up to seven billion cans - and counting! |
