Master the artichoke

artichokes

Maybe it's the name, but many people 'choke' when it comes to preparing artichokes.

Is alchemy really needed to transform the formidable artichoke into a delicious dish? Not if you attend Fed Square Harvest: The Artichoke in Melbourne on July 29.

Fed Square is celebrating seasonal produce, first with a spotlight on the artichoke. In a free event in the Square, some of Melbourne's top chefs will come together to share their secrets in cooking with this exquisite vegetable.

Fed Square Harvest: The Artichoke will run from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 29 July, and will be hosted by food identity Pete Dillion from Cravings on Joy FM. Accomplished chefs Brigette Hafner, Rosa Mitchell and Tony Twitchett will lead cooking demonstrations on the main stage throughout the day.

A striking pop-up artichoke garden designed by award-winning landscaper Paul Hyland of Glasshaus will be installed especially for the day, featuring the first crop of late winter and early spring artichokes - it will be a sight to behold.

Free workshops in garden stalls will be available to all visitors who want to learn how prepare, serve and preserve artichokes.

Fed Square's many restaurants are also joining the celebration of seasonal produce. A five-course artichoke degustation will be served by Taxi restaurant ($60pp), prepared by Tony Twitchett and Rosa Mitchell. It promises to be an artful celebration of artichokes, with modern Australian and Asian influences.

Artichokes will also appear as the produce du jour in at many of the Fed Square restaurants throughout the weekend. Whether Asian inspired at Chocolate Buddha or rustic at Riverland Bar and Café, artichokes will star on menus across the Square - be they pickled or braised, preserved or roasted - whatever tempts your palate.
