Robot chefs

Would you like an extra pair of hands when you have a big meal to prepare? Most cooks would!

Now it seems, with the new developments from Moley, that this helpful  solutions could be closer than we think. Moley Robotics has created a smartphone-controlled robotic chef that can be programmed to cook ‘world-class food’. The robot is designed to be installed above conventional cooktops where suspended arms follow commands issued via a smartphone app. According to the robot’s developers, the robot can match the dexterity of human hands and work just as quickly as a professional chef.

Megan Gibson from Time magazine said that in less than half an hour, the robot chef made a crab bisque based on a recipe developed by Tim Anderson, the winner of 2011’s UK MasterChef series.

“From selecting the right heat level on the stove-top to adding the pre-arranged ingredients at just the right moment to operating a small mixer, the robot arms made the soup from scratch,” said Gibson. “It even plated up the soup, including scraping the bottom of the ladle against the rim of the saucepan in order to prevent drips.”

Anderson, who worked with the developers to create the kitchen for the robot told Time that the robot will “help people build brands,” adding that the aim is to have professional chefs record themselves cooking their own recipes that the robot can in turn mimic and replicate. Anderson says that people will be able to learn how to make a variety of dishes by watching the robots in action.

The cost of the robotic chef which comes complete with a purpose built kitchen is estimated at around US$15,000. The Moley Robotic Chef is expected to be released in 2017.
