Yes, it does look rather over-the-top - and it is meant to. What you see adorning the top of this pizza is not gold paint. It is pure 23-carat gold leaf. Edible and VERY expensive. And it is very likely that the Sydney-based originators of this costly exercise, Pizza Design Co may not keep this on the permanent menu. The original; plan is that Golden Margherita will be offered exclusively on the Menulog platform from October 13, with complimentary Golden Margheritas on offer for the first 100 orders. Whoops! Looks like we missed out on that tempting offer.
Those that now buy the pizza will need to budget for $50, and Pizza Design Co. owner Nick Tsotras anticipates the pizza will be a hit with locals. “The Golden Margherita will be on our Menulog menu for a limited time," says Nick, "and if the demand is high we’ll keep it on our menu.”
