Growing greens underground

Most peoplke believe that plants, especially vegetables, do best in fresh clean air and with plenty of sunlight. Well, not always! In Britain a couple of men have been trialling the growing of greens underground, in the tunnels below the Northern Line, near Clapham North.

It is not a new idea. During World War II herbs were successfully grown in South London air raid shelters. 

 

Before you dismiss these men's plans as crackpot and doomed to failure, you need to know that Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr (above) has joined the company as a director.

The plans are to initially grow exotic herbs and shoots, such as pea shoots, then other salad items such as rocket, garlic chives, red vein sorrel, and Thai basil. Later, edible flowers and miniature vegetables are on the gardening menu as well as heritage tomato varieties and mushrooms.
