Right on trend, a new butcher has opened recenty in Newtown, Sydney. Suzy Spoon’s Vegetarian Butcher is a vegetarian deli café. Spoons hand-make their own brand of vegan sausages, burger patties, schnitzels, seitan, smokey rasher and Bbolognese. Their products can be bought in packs and taken home to cook, or eaten at the cafe, in the form of delicious meals such as burgers, spaghetti bolognese, lasagne, breakfasts and lots more.

Spoon's inspiration comes from the desire to create delicious cruelty free, meat free meals that are quick to prepare, taste great and are not over processed or made of un-natural ingredients.

Suzy Spoon has been cooking vegan food for over 20 years. In that time she has owned and run two vegetarian businesses. She has been vegetarian for 28 years but interestingly her grandmother’s family used to own the biggest butchery in the Northern suburbs of Sydney (SW Hales). With many local butcheries closing down Suzy believes this new spin on the butcher concept is a sign of the times.

Interestingly, Europe is leading the world with ersatz meats. Meat made entirely from vegetables, developed by the Netherlands-based company The Vegetarian Butcher has successfully expanded into new markets for its “strip steaks” and “smoked bacon” made entirely from vegetables in retail outlets across Europe.

The latest meat substitute products, which are sold throughout the Benelux region, are made from locally-sourced peas, carrots, onions and potatoes. The Company said its products “match meat in taste, mouth feel and nutritional value”.
