The busy people at the Markets of Melbourne (a collective between three of Melbourne's longest running cultural icons- Prahran Market, Queen Victoria Market and South Melbourne Market) have reminded us that tamarillos are now at the peak of their season. The Tamarillo is an egg-shaped fruit also known as a 'tree tomato' and is said to have originated from Central and South America. With a deep red, soft flesh, tamarillos are full of a number of rich vitamins and are low in fat and carbohydrates - perfect for a balanced diet. Allow it to ripen at room temperature, then store in the fridge for up to two weeks to maintain freshness. The unique taste of the tamarillo means it can be served and enjoyed in a variety of ways. Scoop out the flesh and eat with cheeses and other seasonal fruits, or add to curries. Peel if using raw or poach for a couple of minutes until tender, then peel and use as you would any stewed fruit. Quirky fact: To easily peel the skin off, dip the whole fruit into boiling water for up to 20 seconds. |
