Beautiful beaver tails

Most people have heard of beavers - those busy little creatures that love to create dams on creeks in North America. But did you know that you can taste beaver tails in Canada?

DON'T WORRY - these are not real beaver tails!

The BeaverTails dessert is basically a deep-fried, crispy-on-the-outside, chewy-on-the-inside doughnut. The pastries are made with whole wheat and are hand-pulled to make them resemble a beaver’s sturdy tail. Making them even more irresistible, they’re typically topped off with cinnamon sugar, maple cream, or nutella, although options abound when it comes to toppings.

As you can see, there are many options. But choose carefully as they are filling, and you will possibly not have room for two at a sitting!

The iconic BeaverTails franchise began in 1978 when Grant and Pam Hooker began selling the dessert at a community fair outside Ottawa, Ontario. Their recipe originated with Grant's German-Canadian grandmother.

The first store opened in the Byward Market in downtown Ottawa and, later, along the Rideau Canal which is in winter, the world’s largest outdoor skating rink. There, skaters can enjoy a hearty snack and warm their toes at one of the bonfires on the canal.

Now, there are over 140 locations worldwide.
