Dairy-Free Downunder

Dairy-Free Downunder

A plant-based cheese innovation: from ‘down under’ to the world

Dairy-Free Down Under is a 100 per cent family-owned Australian business, headquartered at Carrara, Queensland, and employing 30 Gold Coast locals

Dairy-Free Down Under was born from owners Kevin and Jenny Flanagan’s desire for their family of five to all sit around the table and enjoy the same meal, despite one of their daughters’ intolerance to dairy.

Dairy-Free Down Under is the only Australian owned large-scale manufacturer of dairy-free cheeses and dips that has been successfully commercialised for the retail market

The Dairy-Free Down Under philosophy is about inclusivity and a belief that everyone a deserves seat at the table – it doesn’t’matter if you’re dairy-free, vegan, flexitarian or “lessatarian”

Dairy-Free Down Under’s growing product range includes mozzarella and cheddar-style shreds, cheddar-style blocks, mozzarella slices, cheddar slices, cashew cream cheese, cashew parmesan, aioli, mayo, sour cream and cheese and cracker snack packs

Australia’s only large-scale vegan cheese and dip manufacturer Dairy-Free Down Under is now exporting to six countries without even having set foot on a plane, thanks to introductions to overseas markets provided by the Gold Coast City Council.

In fact, the deal was sealed on the Gold Coast during the Commonwealth Games

Highlights

-       Australia’s only large-scale vegan cheese and dip manufacturer is now exporting to six countries

-       The export deal was sealed on home turf during GCCC’s Commonwealth Games trade events

-       Mayor Tate says export helps create more jobs – Dairy-Free Down Under employs 30 locals

-       The Gold Coast is leading the way with plant-based food innovation.

Dairy-Free Down Under co-founder Kevin Flanagan said at the time he was so busy working in the family start-up that he almost didn’t attend the trade event.

“I got talked into going at the last minute by a representative from the Gold Coast City Council,” Kevin said. “I’m thankful now because as a result we were able to begin exporting within our first year of launching Dairy-Free Down Under, which we never even dreamed possible.”

The Carrara-headquartered business, which employs 30 locals, began its exports in October 2019, with export orders from Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore growing each month.

Australia has become the third largest plant-based nation in the world. Food innovation is growing with the trend, and home-grown Australian brands like Dairy-Free Down Under are leading the dairy-free charge.

Dairy-Free Down Under co-founder Jenny Flanagan said Australia, and in particular the Gold Coast, was internationally renowned for its healthy lifestyle and overseas markets were wanting “what’s in our water”.

It seems rather than being a fad, plant-based diets are only on the increase, which is likely to lead to more export opportunities for this budding Gold Coast business.
