Sydney's Vivid festival

Vivid Sydney, an eye-popping animated light show, has become the city's way to heat up the cooler months with brightness and light. In one of the more eye-catching installations, the public can climb inside the historic Fort Denison Martello tower to peer out from the colonial fortress across the Sydney Vivid vista at night via a light treatment called EYE by lighting designer and Vivid regular, Andre Kecskes.

Fort Denison is a tiny little island fortress that pops up in the heart of the harbour, providing front row viewing of Vivid’s newest innovation – the enormous Harbour Lights programme, which will see a flotilla of illuminated boats circling around the island with new colour changing light technology turning the harbour into a stage for the floating light spectacle.

Vivid visitors can ditch the crowds at Circular Quay and board a ferry to the island for a sit down dinner experience beneath the EYE each Friday and Saturday night of Vivid Sydney and on the final Sunday evening.

Kecskes has also created a subtle lighting treatment of the golden-yellow sandstone walls of the 150 year-old fort, its chimneys and sole palm tree, to create a mirage-like spectacle on the harbour at night.

After sell-out nights on the island last year, Fort Denison Restaurant recommends booking to experience Dinner DeLIGHTS and mini DeLIGHTS, starting May 23. Guests to the island, which is usually closed at night, can enjoy a sumptuous two-course dinner in the heated marquee, plus a National Parks guided island tour and the chance to climb in the Tower to peer out of EYE.

Ferries depart Circular Quay for a five-minute harbour cruise to the island for dinner and drinks between 6pm and 10pm, with return ferry shuttles every 20 minutes from 5.30pm to 10.30pm each operating evening, May 23-June 8.
