It's interesting that one of the most beautiful estuary near Sydney was named for a British politician. The waterway was surveyed by crew members of HMS Sirius in 1788, very soon after the white colony was established, and named Pitt Water after British Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger.

At the south end, Church Point and Bayview have iconic views of the sphinx-shaped Lion island.

Extending south from Broken Bay, and parallel to the coast, this is a place beloved by boat owners at lovers of fishing.

The northern beaches of Sydney have a relaxed beachy ambience, and on the peninsula in the far north, there is easy access to both ocean beaches on the east and Pittwater on the west.

Clareville beach (more correctly Long Beach) is a friendly family beach, ideal for the bucket and spade set, and their parents at the barbecue with a glass of wine in hand.

By 1803 a fleet of privately-owned coasters had begun operating between Pittwater, Cowan Creek and Berowra Waters on the Hawkesbury River which empties into the ocean to the north of Pittwater. These usually traveled in convey to reduce the risk of piracy by escaped convicts living along the shore.

Scotland Island lies at the southern end of Pittwater snsd is accessible only by boat or ferry. I has long been popular with artists, and was once home to Dorothea MacKellar who wrote the famous poem, which has become an ode to Australia, My Country.

One of the easiest ways to see part of Pittwater is to take a commuter ferry ride around the island. Begin or end your trip with coffee and a meal at the Church Point Cafe at the ferry wharf.

See this video to understand why this is one of Sydney's best-kept surprises.
