Turning on a tap might seem like such a small thing, but this year the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) will celebrate 100 years since irrigation water was released into the region, with an historical re-enactment of 'Turning on the Water'. Friday 13th July will mark 100 years since the community gathered at the Yanco regulator to watch as the Minister for Works, Arthur Griffiths, and two men who had worked on the construction of the irrigation network, winched open the gates that released the first irrigation water into the MIA. Hundreds of people witnessed the moment that forever changed the arid plains of the western Riverina. Newspapers at the time reported that "with the noise of cheers, a wave of muddy red water broke out and along the surface of the southern channel." The Yanco regulator in the Riverina region of NSW is still doing the job it did 100 years ago, although today the regulator is fully automated and remotely controlled. First there were grapes in the Griffith area planted at Hanwood in 1913 by John James McWilliam. Soon wines were made and fruit and orchards were planted. Griffith is now NSW's largest premium wine producing area, accounting for about a quarter of the country's wine. And it's all because of the water. Just as the community celebrated 100 years ago, Leeton will host a weekend of celebrations and activities to commemorate the event. Residents and visitors are encouraged to come out and enjoy the local attractions and special events that have been planned. |
