You can learn lot about a town by looking upwards... Tenterfield, in the far north of New South Wales, close to the Queensland border, was an important centre.
Communication was essential, so this newspaper office (now closed) deserves to proudly remain in the main street. Tenterfield Station, home of the Donaldson family, began in 1842. Owner, Stuart Donaldson, went on to become the first Premier of NSW.
A post office opened in 1849 (replaced in 1881 by the one above) and was followed soon by a bank, church and hospital.
Places like this were essential, not only to farmers but almost everyone, as horses were the main means of transport.
Who knows if this saddlery, begin in 1908, was in competition with Kneipp, but it certainy became world-famous when Peter Allen released his famous song in 1970.
It is worth taking a slow walk along Rouse Street, the main street of town, and looking up at these and many more facades that tell the history of this early settlement. Read more about Tenterfield...
