Walk Scotland |
Experience a new side of Scotland next time you pull on your walking boots with an amble through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. There are seven walking wonders, and each provides a unique glimpse into Scotland's natural heritage, from the dark depths of the unknown as you stroll alongside legendary lochs, to the spectacular scenery you will see when you reach each mountain summit.
Lovingly known by locals as ‘The Ben’, Ben Nevis stands at 4,411ft, close to the small town of Fort William – a great place to spot some happy trekkers as they reach the finishing point of the West Highland Way. The main track up to the summit of the mountain attracts thousands of visitors every year; the walk itself is often described as slow but steady and can take around six to seven hours on average, along with many glugs of water and a few sit downs along the way, to complete both the ascent and descent. You’re likely to come across some snow on your way up Ben Nevis for most parts of the year, including summer, so bear this in mind when deciding when to visit. The best time of year for most is between June – October, but whenever you go, make sure you put safety first and heed advice about navigation on Ben Nevis.
Described as Scotland’s most romantic glen, Glencoe is a beautiful setting for walkers and hill climbers. Steeped in Scottish history at its best, Glencoe was home to Fingal, a famous warrior from Gaelic mythology, as well as the MacDougalls and MacDonalds in later years. The best time of year to visit is spring when the wild flowers begin to cover the mountains.
Loch Ness, one of Scotland’s most famous landmarks, is not only one of Scotland’s deepest freshwater lochs, but it’s also home to the mysterious Loch Ness Monster. The South Loch Ness Trail is a fantastic route along the loch if you’d like to follow a more remote, ‘untouched’ path. Along the way you will find a host of wildlife, small communities and the beautiful Falls of Foyers as you head east towards Inverness. Weather around the loch tends to be mild all year round, but try to visit sometime between March – September, when the weather tends to be warmer and drier. You might even head home with a bit of a tan! |
