Ackergill Tower, Wick, Scotland

ackergill

A stunning 15th century Scottish castle, Ackergill Tower is just a stone's throw from John o' Groats in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. Luxurious and exclusive it is purposely low profile and totally private.

The style of architecture implies that the Tower was built in the later 15th century, circa 1475 and from this early period the famous story of Helen Gunn dates. Known as the 'Beauty of Braemore,' she was abducted from her home in Braemore on her wedding night and kept prisoner in the Tower by the infamous Dugald Keith. Rather than succumb to his less than honourable advances, she leapt from the battlements. The stone on which she was believed to have fallen, and which bears her outline, can be seen nearby.

FACTS:

How to get there: By car from Inverness, approximately two hours (an additional 30 minutes if coming from the airport). The trip is through some of the most stunning countryside in the UK. By air, Ackergill Tower is just five minutes from Wick Airport. Scheduled flights into Aberdeen or Edinburgh and then on to Wick with either Flybe/Loganair from Edinburgh or with Eastern Airways from Aberdeen.

What is available: There are 28 bedrooms in total, all with en-suite, and no two rooms are the same but all are finished to a stunning standard. Choose from bedrooms in The Tower, Old Laundry, The Smiddy or Keeper's Cottage and there's also The Beach House with offers an additional five bedrooms.
