North of Airth, stands a truly bizarre folly, The Pineapple Summerhouse, Dunmore House, Falkirk. Built in 1761 and shaped like a pineapple (yes, really) it stands 14 metres high. This piece of whimsy was originally created as Dunmore House's garden retreat - a summerhouse - and no doubt was the height of architectural daring in its day. Strange as it appears, it seems to have been carefully planned as each 'leaf' of the pineapple is so designed to drain water to prevent frost damage.
But why a pineapple? Apparently these had been grown as an exotic fruit in hothouses in Scotland around the early 18th century and may even have been raised on this estate - even in this building. Others think it was because Lord Dunmore was brought back, forcibly, from serving as Governor of Virginia. There, sailors would put a pineapple on the gatepost to announce their return home. Lord Dunmore, who was fond of a joke, announced his return more prominently. What is more interesting is the pineapple is administered by the Landmark Trust, and the workmen's quarters, or bothies, are available as exclusive - albeit eccentric - holiday accommodation. Dunmore House has extensive gardens and is open daily all year, but why settle for only seeing it in visiting hours, when you can move in and live under a pineapple?
