Most of us think of London when we think of Sherlock Holmes but that would be to miss the man behind the character because Sherlock Holmes was actually born in Edinburgh. The Glasshouse Hotel is perfectly placed on Picardy Place, where the author was born in 1859. The Hotel also overlooks a statue of Sherlock Holmes on Picardy Place and is a few steps for the Conan Doyle Bar. There are a number of walking tours of Edinburgh based Sherlock Holmes or Conan Doyle from the Glasshouse Hotel, which includes a visit to the Surgeons' Hall Museum. Along with many other interesting and sometimes gruesome facts, you'll learn about the man after whom Sherlock Holmes is modelled, Joseph Bell. It was in this very place where Conan Doyle sat for his anatomy exams. Letters, artworks, objects and film draw together the many connections between Edinburgh, medicine and the work of Arthur Conan Doyle.
The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle permanent exhibition here focuses especially on Conan Doyle's relationship to Joseph Bell who later became President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and whose analytical mind and keen powers of observation led Conan Doyle to write 'It is most certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes'. Maps of Edinburgh showing the location of Holmesian/Doylean connections are also available. Behind the facade of the 150 year old Lady Glenorchy church, you will find the clean, modern lines of The Glasshouse Hotel - a 5 star boutique hotel in Edinburgh.
