Luggage tips |
Most of us take vacations to get away from the stress of everyday life. However it is easy to fail to realize that this time of relaxation leaves us vulnerable to identity thieves. Whether you are cooped up in an all-inclusive resort, flying overseas, or hitting the road to explore the country - each type of vacation involves a variety of unique risks where identity thieves look to take advantage of travelers who have let their guard down. TrustedID - the nation's most comprehensive identity protection and reputation management service - offers some easy tips to protect every type of vacationer from identity theft while they are away: Beach Resort: - Lock It Up: Lock or hide wallets, sensitive documents, ipads, smartphones, etc., in the hotel room. Everyone knows someone who has had items stolen at a resort. Any credible resort offers a safe in the room. Use it! Or at least keep valuables well-hidden and out of plain view. Overseas Adventure: - Duplicate Documents: When traveling overseas, scan and email important documents to yourself before leaving. Scan passports, credit cards (front for card number and back for phone number) and any other critical information needed if personal items were to be lost or stolen. Road Trip: - Don't Stand Alone: Sadly, there has been a rise in stolen account information and PINs from ATMs. Avoid stand-alone, unaffiliated ATM's and stick with bank ATMs whenever possible. - Public Internet: Be cautious while using public Wi-Fi's. If using public Wi-Fi in motels or internet cafes, never access personal information, especially bank accounts. Back on the home front: - Neighborhood Watch: Have trusted friends or neighbors stop by to check on the house, or set lamp timers. Also have them come by and pick up your mail. No mail delivery or an overstuffed mailbox is an indicator that you are not home for thieves. Social Media Monitoring: Never announce vacation plans on social media. Don't make it easy for friends of friends to see you're not home. Also be wary of posting pictures of your trip if your privacy settings aren't up to snuff. More tips and information are available on TrustedID's blog.
