A Dozen More Things you'll be Glad you Packed

To fill some of those off corners of your luggage, here are some more items you will be so thankful you didn't leave home without!

  • A cardboard tube, like a potato chip canister. Carry it empty outbound, or pack underwear in it. On the return it protects fragile shells, ornaments and breakables, even in your suitcase is in the cargo hold.
  • A foldout bag that rolls into itself to become a small purse-sized ball will never fail to return as a carrier for those last minute purchases, gifts or magazines.
  • A regular tape measure will measure clothes you may want to buy for people at home, especially when the garments are marked in hard-to-comprehend sizes. It will even stand-in for bathroom scales, as you can keep tabs on your waistline!
  • A tube of lip balm to keep lips from chapping in the desiccating air of long distance jets, and also save cracks from developing on your feet after prolonged walking.
  • A supply of small gifts - stickers, pins or badges - from your home country to say 'thankyou' to a helpful child or local.
  • A pad of thankyou notes with their envelopes. Not only is your gratitude more immediate, but it saves time and postage when you return.
  • Light magazines you have been wanting to read but not keep. Throw them away as you finish them.
  • A small sturdy bag, such as a camera bag, that can hold all your needs for the flight, fits under the seat in front and is the ideal height to provide a footrest is great if you are average height or less.
  • A wad of Post-it notes for addresses or shopping lists. As they are sticky they are less likely to get lost or dropped.
  • A small bundle of US$1 notes - almost universal currency that makes an acceptable tip.
  • A small plastic bottle to fill with clean water from your hotel is a great plus if you are outdoors, in the heat, or even flying for long hours. It saves buying bottled water and prevents dehydration.
  • A cotton scarf tied as a bandanna which can be worn around your forehead or throat to soak up perspiration in hot conditions. It will also cover your head in places where women are required to.
