100 years - Haigh's Chocolates

A century deserves special congratulations. On 1st May 1915, when Alfred E Haigh opened the doors of the very first Haigh’s Chocolates store at 34 King William Street, Adelaide, he began adding his own flavour to the industry, and in 1917 he started producing chocolate-covered fruit centres, which Haigh's still make today.

Business was booming and it was time to expand. In 1917 Alfred bought the family home and land at Parkside South Australia where he built a small factory, now the Visitors Centre. In 1922, he moved shops to the Beehive Corner – still Haigh's Adelaide flagship store. Sadly, in 1933, Alfred passed away suddenly. His son Claude took over the running of the business, which had by then grown to six stores.

Alfred’s grandson, John Haigh, joined the business in 1946 with a vision to take Haigh’s chocolate making to new heights. He trained in Switzerland with Lindt and Sprungli and visited the US to look at production, shop styles and marketing. John revolutionised the way Haigh's manufactured chocolate and in 1959 became Managing Director.

During the war years, supplies were difficult. Yet despite the sugar rationing Haigh’s managed to keep on trading, making boiled sweets and wrapped toffees for the armed forces.

During the 1950s and 60s, Haigh’s chocolates were also sold at the movies. In those days, movie-goers bought their treats from the Haigh’s counters and the Haigh’s ‘tray boys’ and ‘tray girls’ who stood at the front of the screen during interval.

In the 1960s television took over from cinema as a form of entertainment so John Haigh looked elsewhere to grow the business. In 1965 Haigh’s opened the first store outside South Australia, in Collins Street Melbourne, where Haigh’s chocolates proved to be just as popular.

Haigh’s is very proud to be the oldest family-owned chocolate maker in Australia. Today the company is run by fourth generation Haighs, Alister and Simon, who started in the 1970s and had to work their way through all areas of the company. They’ve been joint Managing Directors since 1990, with John Haigh Chairman of the Board.

Haigh’s Chocolates, has launched a special collaboration with Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, Yalumba, and Australia’s oldest family-owned brewery, Cooper’s, as part of its centenary celebrations.

‘The Collaboration’, a handmade box of chocolates developed over a 12 month period, contains a selection of three offerings including a 70 per cent dark chocolate truffle, made from a blend of three chocolates and decorated with a gold fleck; Antique Tawny Fig Liquer, consisting of Australian figs steeped in Yalumba Antique Tawny; and the Stout Ganache, whose centre is flavoured with Coopers’ Stout.

The Collaboration became available for purchase on August 18 at Haigh’s Chocolates stores in Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne, and online......

A century of Pyrex

Hands up if you have Pyrex in your kitchen cupboard!

A hundred years ago, it was revolutionary and cooks everywhere were delighted with the heat-resistant glass that could go from oven to table, because it also looked attractive too. Pyrex was originally introduced by Corning Incorporated in 1915.

Some people have thought that it was made up from the Greek pyr and the Latin rex, it was because the company had a number of prior trade-marks ending in the letters ex. One of the first commercial products to be sold under the new mark was a pie plate and to make it easier to say, the letter 'r' was inserted between pie and ex and the whole thing condensed to PYREX.

In the late 1930s and 1940s, Corning also introduced other products under the Pyrex brand, including opaque tempered soda-lime glass for bowls and bakeware, and a line of Pyrex Flameware for stovetop use, before divesting its consumer products division in 1998. It discontinued its production of Pyrex products, but still licensed the Pyrex brand name to other companies.

See how the family of Pyrex goods has grown in a hundred years.....

180 years - Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is the first city to have been given the accolade of 'world's most liveable city' for five consecutive years. Celebrating 180 years since settlement by Europeans in 1835, it had a small and rocky start but is now a major Australian capital city.

Call them retro, but Melbourrnes residents love their trams and they are a cheap and efficient way to get around the city  and inner suburbs. Better still, they make an ideal moving billboard for art and advertising.

The mid 1880s gold rush helped Melbourne's economy enormously and many of its beautiful buildings came after the money, and new residents, began to flow in to the state.

Melbourne is now a colourful, vibrant, stylish, and multicultural city. Great coffee, brilliant street art, a fashion capital, and some say, the most European of the Australian state capitals.

Quixotic and stylish by day, Melbourne shimmers by night.

A quarter of a millennium - Hennessy

Hennessy, is a cognac house with headquarters in Cognac, France. The Hennessy distillery was founded by Irishman Richard Hennessy in 1765. Today, the company of Jas Hennessy & Co. sells about 50 million bottles a year worldwide, or more than 40 percent of the world’s Cognac, making it the world's largest Cognac producer.

A collector anniversary blend

At the occasion of its 250th anniversary, Hennessy created a unique blend that embodies the Maison's History. Of a bright, warm shade of amber, this cognac is of great distinction and intensity.

A number of artists and designers have prepared works to celebrate this milestone event:

A panoramic stage

The stage is interactive and modular, with movable partitions (inspired by the staves of a cognac barrel) that open and close as we progress through the scenes of this final act in the Hennessy experience. When closed, these partitions become a screen for films by five international artistes .When open, they reveal a stage on which local artists perform in different productions that change from country to country. Happenings—readings, choreography, performances—that take us back and back, following the thread that has drawn Hennessy to the far ends of the Earth: the drive to pass on a legacy, combined with a passion for other cultures. Designer Constance Guisset.

From the land to the savoir faire

In this diaporama, the artist recreates himself as several different characters and delves into the mysteries of Hennessy’s ageing and blending of eaux-de-vie. Along the way, he manipulates objects essential to the process of creating cognac. The real world of Hennessy is reappropriated into an unusual and entertaining walk in the heart of Cognac. It’s “just like being there”. Pierrick Sorin
