1. Up, up...and away

Europe has always been a popular destination for Australians, but 2020 will see Europe’s lesser-travelled counterparts come into the spotlight. Tourism to both Turkey and Albania will be on the rise due to their ease of accessibility but their captivating feeling of being worlds away.

Home to some of the most picturesque landscapes in the world, Turkey is the cultural bridge between Europe and Asia, with ruins and monuments, a testament to the many fallen empires, alongside Pammukale and Cappadocia, two of the most stunning natural wonders, and with Exodus Travels, travellers have the option to experience it than by hot air balloon at sunrise.

2. Witness Canada's cosmic secret

The phenomenon of the Northern Lights has drawn many visitors to the top of the world. The only experience of its kind in North America, winter visitors to Yukon Territory may now view the northern lights from 36,000 feet in the air, taking off from Whitehorse with Aurora 360 from 23 – 27 January 2020.

Once airborne, the pilot will follow a custom flight path, determined by a team of scientists to optimise aurora viewing potential. The full package includes outstanding cuisine, an evening of Yukon First Nations stories and dance, scientific presentations and a special ‘nature day’ showcasing Yukon’s unique land, water and sky. With only 70 seats available, Aurora 360 comes with serious bragging rights!

See this for yourself! (Credit: Juilian)

See the Aurora from the inside! The Northwest Territories sit directly under the aurora oval, making it one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis. Jump on a big-wheeled winter fat bike and make the most of the bike trails surrounding the capital city of Yellowknife. Pause, turn your eyes skyward, and be transfixed by the Northern Lights parading proudly overhead. It’s the ultimate backdrop for an incredible outdoor experience.

OR

Get off the grid in one of Yukon’s remote wilderness lodges, where you can combine aurora viewing with a spot of ice fishing or snowmobiling. Want more? Step back in time in a prospector-style wall tent, formerly used by gold seekers and trappers, just 20 minutes outside the capital city of Whitehorse. Marvel at the ribbons of colour blazing overhead in the night sky, then warm up inside over a wood-fired barrel stove, a mug of hot chocolate, and homemade maple syrup taffy.

Come to Quebec for a Canadian Christmas

Not all the best Christmas markets are in Europe. Winter is part of the DNA of Québec City and its people. From November, the holiday spirit grips the Old City, from the opening of the German Christmas Market to New Year’s celebrations on Grande Allée. During February, the whole town comes out to play for the 10-day Québec Winter Carnival. Spend a weekend in an igloo at the magical Hôtel de Glace, or try your hand at urban ice fishing at Village Nordik right in the heart of town. With the magnificent Fairmont le Château Frontenac towering over the historic cobblestone streets, glittering under a blanket of snow, it’s easy to see why winter in Quebec City is nothing short of enchanting.

3. Stay at a villa in Chianti

Castello Chianti is a hilltop gem clad in Tuscany’s signature honey-hued stone and blessed with eight luxurious suites. The owners rescued this 14th-century castle from ruin and made it their passion project, transforming the crumbling walls into an elegant home-away-from-home and offering a true Tuscan dream to the select few. Perfect for an upscale staycation as well as a geographically privileged jumping off point for all of the region’s must-see sights.

4. Most beautiful Christmas tree in Europe

Brussels-based travel organization European Best Destinations recently named The Most Beautiful Christmas Trees in Europe.

The Vilnius tree in the Cathedral Square was declared as the leader from the continent’s seventeen most attractive. More than 14 000 travellers from 82 countries voted to select a city in Europe where the most beautiful Christmas tree is expected to be found this year.

The good news is that not a single tree was cut down to build Lithuania’s most beautiful Christmas tree. The 27-metre tall metal construction is made up of 6000 branches and over five kilometres of lighting lit by 70,000 light bulbs. It is especially designed to create a completely sustainable Christmas tree.

Any actual tree branches used are collected by foresters while carrying out the general maintenance of the forest. Therefore not only trees, but even branches are not cut just for spectacle.

These Christmas trees were ranked by European Best Destinations as European top 5

7. Coco meets Wendy - in a garden

Sydney Harbour is known and rated highly worldwide. What many people do NOT know is that there is a secret garden with stunning views right on the waterfront, showcasing the Sydney Harbour Bridge  and the busy waterway.

Brett Whiteley was a famous Australian artist who painted many of his works from this vantage point. After his death in 1992, his widow, Wendy Whiteley decided to create a permanent and beautiful memorial to him.

Wendy’s Secret Garden has grown into a giant living work of art. To date, Wendy (left, above) has generously paid for the entire garden and its upkeep by her gardeners, and now is collaborating with COCO Chocolate.

This signature, not-for-profit chocolate bar is designed to compliment Brett Whiteley’s iconic Sydney paintings and supports the Trust to maintain this unique garden to the high standards she has set.

'I’ve loved making the garden,' she says. 'It’s been a great gift to my life. It let me find myself again and it’s my gift to share with the public. Nothing disappears faster than a garden, when it is not properly maintained.'

In a moment of pure inspiration, Sydney chocolatier Coco Chocolate approached Wendy Whiteley to collaborate to create signature chocolate bars to compliment the iconic works of Brett Whiteley. This was inspired by the proximately of Coco Chocolate Kirribilli to Lavender Bay, Rebecca’s regular visits to Wendy’s garden with her children and the love of Brett Whiteley’s iconic Sydney paintings.

'To create this collaboration with all profits going to support Wendy’s garden is a privilege and a joy' says founder Rebecca Knights.

Wendy's response to this is: "Brett loved chocolate!"

Rebecca Knights opened her first chocolate shop in Edinburgh UK in 2004, then the Edinburgh Chocolate School in 2006, launching in Harvey Nichols and Selfridges London in 2006, as the head chocolatier to rebrand the Harvey Nichols label signature range of chocolate bars and drinking chocolates.

Rebecca opened the prestigious and hugely popular Sydney Chocolate School in 2014.

... to different  ways to travel, and a great way to get up close to see how the local people live.

One way is to stay in a local village and take part in the day-to-day duties. UNWTO has defined Responsible Tourism this way: “To make destinations worth visiting and worth living”.

Kerala Tourism took a revolutionary step by identifying the potential of this sustainable tourism model through a unique project, promoting many activities including classified homestays and serviced villas across the State.

15. Put Queensland on your 2020 radar

Here are several reasons why Queensland should be on your to-visit list (HINT: there are m any more!)

Sail into the Cooktown Expo 2020

The year 2020 is a big one for Australia marking 250 years since British explorer, Captain James Cook, sailed up the east coast of the country, diarising his epic journey and capturing new botanical discoveries. The explorer made three shore landings in Queensland: the town of 1770, half way between Bundaberg and Gladstone; Lizard Island where he climbed Cook's Look to chart a course through the treacherous reef; and Cooktown, where his crew spent 48 days fixing a broken ship hull.

Cooktown is one of the nation's last frontiers and a gateway to great wilderness encounters and epic indigenous experiences. It's also the best place to mark the past but celebrate the present with Cooktown Expo 2020, held from 17 July - 4 August, 2020.

Follow the Fairway to the Outback Queensland Golf Masters

The fact that no one took out the million dollar hole-in-one win last year shouldn't stop keen golfers from following the fairway to the Outback Queensland Golf Masters 2020. Teeing off in Biloela on June 20, the second instalment of this “anything goes” games will see another six rural towns put a shine on their greens. Or browns.

Don't expect the manicured fairways of St Andrews as the Outback Masters is a dirty game, often with more 'roos than spectators and the need to rake the brown-green before you putt, chip and drive. Still there are plenty of laughs and of course there's a spectacular prize.

18. EOY escapes

Do the holidays stress you out? You are in good company if they do as around 40 percent of people say they suffer more stress in holiday season.

Travel website, Smart Lemur, an authentic has listed some of the best destinations for this year’s winter getaway.

~~~
Sri Lanka, South Asia
December in Sri Lanka, an island country surrounded by the Indian Ocean, is the most pleasant time – sunny and not overcrowded with tourists. The average daily temperature for this month is 27°C.
Visitors spending Christmas here enjoy the best tea and cinnamon in the world, exchange presents on the sandy beaches, drink from coconuts and watch wild elephants. Seeing these giants from close up in their natural habitat is one of the unique attractions in Sri Lanka.
Those eager to have more traditional holiday activities, are welcome to visit the capital Colombo, offering festive markets, special dinners, live music events and dance performances.
~~~

Here are other options they suggest for an end-of-year break with comfortable weather:

Mauritius, Indian Ocean - called the pearl of the Indian Ocean, is a tiny island full of lavish nature, ranging from crystal-clear waters and coloured layers of sand to tropical forests and lively underwater world. During December, air temperature is likely to reach 29°C, and travellers get to enjoy up to nine daily hours of sunshine.

Svalbard, Norway - one of the northernmost settlements in the world, luring travellers who dream of Arctic Christmas. From mid-November to late January, this Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean enters into a mystical dark season known as Polar Night. During this period, the sun is hidden from the horizon and everything is pitch-dark around the clock.

Christmas Island, Australia - in the Indian Ocean, 1,550km northwest from the Australian mainland. Apart from its obvious affiliation to Christmas after being named so on December 25th in 1643, the island is rich in spectacular nature.  It is the only place on Earth to witness one of the most incredible natural processes – an annual red crab migration. Bright-coloured crabs from all over the island start marching towards the ocean, all at the same time. And it usually occurs in December.

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador - a volcanic archipelago, famous for its diverse wildlife and jaw-dropping scenery. December is a warm and dry season with air temperature reaching 27°C. Visitors get a chance to see rare animals like marine iguanas, sea turtles, flamingos, Masked Boobies and White-cheeked Pintails, which tend to stay away during other months.

Smart Lemur is a website created by a group of travel enthusiasts who are passionate about unique and authentic travel experiences.

19. Magical Christmas - with a French accent

Close your eyes and imagine lying on a deck chair in the warm sun, the waves softly crashing near your toes, and the sound of Polynesian music drifting through the breeze. Now imagine celebrating Christmas in this paradise with your loved ones – feels like a dream doesn’t it? But it doesn’t have to be!

The Islands of Tahiti is a stunning and relaxing place in which to spend the Christmas period, away from the stress of the festive season and the long list of commitments that it brings.

Jet skiing is a very popular activity in French Polynesia. In the lead up to Christmas, there is also plenty to do around The Islands of Tahiti. Why not venture out on a hike to the peaks of the islands’ mountains, taking in the breathtaking views? Or you can take a dive into the islands’ pristine waters and spend the day exploring the abundance of marine life in the surrounding ocean.

A traditional Polynesian breakfast

When Christmas Day comes around you will not be disappointed. The Islands of Tahiti know how to put on a show with the town centre of Papeete throwing a large tropical Christmas party that is bound to be a hit with the whole family. For the foodies in the family, the classic Christmas feast has not been forgotten, and most resorts across the islands put a Tahitian twist on traditional Christmas dishes.

~~~
Whether you are looking to bring your traditional Christmas to a beautiful paradise or are planning on escaping the family, The Islands of Tahiti is the perfect location to spend the festive season.
Go beyond the ‘resort bubble’ on a daytrip to a neighbouring residential island to gain an insight into authentic Maldivian life; or arrange to spend a few days at a local guesthouse – an authentic and affordable way to see a different side of the Maldives. Many local islands such as Thulhaadhoo and Dhigurah have lively markets, handicrafts to purchase – often made from coral – and friendly locals who love to chat or play a game of volleyball. Designed for divers who travel with non-diving partners and guests with a keen interest in spas, Scubaspa’s purpose-built yachts explore the picture-perfect islands and reefs in the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean.
