The Philippines is home to the world's second-longest navigable underground river. The longest is in Mexico.
Located two hours drive from Puerto Princesa City Center, the Underground River is just one part of The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP); one of the most important biodiverse conservation areas in the Philippines.
The Park features a spectacular limestone landscape which contains the underground river that flows directly into the sea and is subject to tidal influence. The river's total of 8.2 kilometers of winding stretches passes through the cave and features significant formations of stalactites and stalagmites. ++++
Italy's secret island of Ponza is just a two hours' drive and short ferry ride away from Rome, making the island very accessible to travellers. What makes it different to other coastal islands is the famous Pilate’s grottoes, a complex of caves dug out of the rock with a series of water-level pools. Their purpose, in ancient Roman times, was to keep large reserves of moray eels and other delicacies ready for the owners' tables. It is possible to take a small cruise to visit these grottoes. |
