| Crazy Crystals in Mexico |

(Pic. Alexander van Driessche) Until you look closely - like really, really closely - it's not obvious that these rocks are absolutely massive crystals. This is the Cave of the Crystals or Giant Crystal Cave (Cueva de los Cristales) a cave connected to the Naica Mine 300 metres (980 ft) below the surface in Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico. The main chamber contains giant selenite crystals some of the largest natural crystals ever found. So far the largest one found was 12 metres long four metres diameter and weighing 55 tonnes! Most of us will never venture into this cave as it is extremely hot with air temperatures reaching up to 58C with 90 to 99 percent humidity. Without proper protection people can only endure approximately ten minutes of exposure at a time. The Giant Crystal cave was discovered in 2000 by miners excavating a new tunnel for the Industrias Peñoles mining company. The caves are currently accessible because the company pumps out the water, keeping them from becoming submerged again. |
