(Architect designed TV tower and hotel at the top of the Jizerské mountains) From the middle of 19th century the top of JeštÄ›d, in the Czech Republic, has welcomed walkers with a refreshment stop, however when the lookout tower caught fire in 1963 the opportunity to build something more spectacular was recognized.
For three years designs were considered on the theme of a TV transmission tower, separate restaurant with small hotel. However architect Karel HubáÄek entered with a radical design that combined them all to universal acclaim. The mountain top location demanded the use of new construction methods and materials as the TV transmitter antennas needed to be enclosed within the structure to cope with the severe climatic conditions.
In 1969 the architectural solution was awarded the world-renowned Perret prize, and in 2000 was awarded the title of the Best Czech Building of the 20th Century. In addition to the amazing 360-degree view, the hotel facilities are of a three-star standard and offer just two suites and 12 double rooms, extended with a further eight rooms of a lower one-star category. On a good day, when the weather is clear, is it possible to discern the 144km distant Žák’s Mountain. The best views however are during the spring and autumn equinoxes, when the sun rises right above Sněžka, the highest mountain in the Czech Republic, to leave the mountain silhouette as a black triangle framed in crimson–gold light.
