Sawday's accommodation finds |
Sawday's does it again with something with which to scratch our itchy feet! The August list seeks out 30 secret sanctuaries, places where it’s easy to pretend the whole world has disappeared. Combine luxury and intimacy on the cusp of a private lake, dine in the huge vaulted granary of a fortified tufo and terracotta farmhouse, or simply gaze up to follow the migratory routes of birds from Europe to Africa in a converted olive mill. Here are the first three:
Mas de l'Adret, Drôme, France Snoozing among acres of lavender and seas of rolling hills, Mas de l'Adret is pure Provence. Total peace and utter seclusion await beside the pool, with views across to Mont Ventoux, whilst the scent of flowers hangs heavy in the air. Could this be paradise? +++
The Temple, Stancombe Park, Gloucestershire, UK This neoclassical miniature temple sits in a grand 20-acre estate, beside a tranquil private lake: inspiration for poets and wild swimmers alike. If you can drag your eyes away from the surrounding splendour the temple itself is equally jaw-dropping - but we'll save that surprise for your visit. This is for the romantics. +++
Juan Valiente, Granada, Spain Cradled by the rocky crags and lush vegetation of the Sierra Nevada, near Granada, Juan Valiente is an architectural wonder. Wander through the surrounding mountains, equipped with picnic and even a friendly dog - or if you'd rather relax indoors, sumptuous bedrooms are bedecked with fresh flowers and crisp cotton.
