Signs Restaurant, Toronto, Canada |
From the street you wouldn't notice anything different about SIGNS Restaurant. However, this unique restaurant is the first of its kind in Canada - and we're not talaking about the cuisine, either. Inside there is the aromas of good food, the sounds of diners enjoying their meals, andbusy staff hurrying around serving tables. But pay attention to those staff. Their hands are doubly busy because they are signing to each other, as every one of them is deaf. 'Come for the experience, Stay for the food,' is the advice given by this restaurant. Located at the lively Yonge and Wellesley intersection in Downtown Toronto area, SIGNS is an upper casual dining restaurant and the first Canadian restaurant that is staffed with deaf servers. From a high quality contemporary menu with a blend of Canadian and international food along with an exquisite wine list, it is becoming popular with locals as well as the deaf community where they can find themselves at ease using their native language. The menu has some helpful basic signs so even hearing diners can communicate with the staff, offering a unique opportunity for guests to use American Sign Language (ASL). Although there are few restaurants employing deaf staff in other parts of the world, SIGNS will have a more interesting concept of guests using ASL to order their food with the help of instructions given in the Menu. It is hoped that guests will not only experience exceptional service, but will also enjoy learning the language while interacting with SIGNS deaf staff.
