Monkey Busine How would you like to share your dinner with this family of macaque monkeys? They look friendly enough, but what if they were employed to serve you in a restaurant? Hold your breath. In the Kayabukiya Tavern, a traditional-style Japanese sake-house restaurant (izakaya) north of Tokyo, the owner really does use macaques to assist with waiting tables. The tavern's owner's two pet macaque monkeys, twelve-year-old Yat-chan, and four-year-old Fuku-chan take customers' drink orders and delivers them to the diners' tables. The restaurant's owner, Otsuka, says that he never initially taught the monkeys; Yat-chan first learned from watching him work. Otsuka said, "It all started one day when I gave him a hot towel out of curiosity and he brought the towel to the customer." Fuku-chan, has the main duty of bringing the attendees hot towels to clean their hands before ordering drinks. See them at work on this video and also here... Both monkeys receive boiled soya beans from customers as tips for their service. The monkeys' environment has been inspected to ensure proper treatment of the animals and due to Japanese animal rights regulations, they are each only allowed to work for two hours a day. |
