In case you're wondering, this huge mural in Kimba, on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, is continuing the craze of large-scale art which has been beckoning visitors to regional towns. Previously those stark white wheat silos did little more than tell you that this was a grain-growing area. Now they have become a different - and artsy - addition to the landscape.
In Ravensthorpe in the south-east of Western Australia, the artist has gone for a natural look. Created by Perth-based Amok Island, the Six Stages of Banksia baxteri ....
... it features small outback native animals and the local banksia tree with its eye-catching flowers and nuts.
In Western Australia, outside Northam, east of Perth, the silos sport two completely different styles. One end is colourful and abstract...
...the other featuring whimsical inventions in an intricate etching style. These artworks are part of PUBLIC Silo Trail, a series of national and international open-air galleries. |
