Tourism is set to boom and a new air service has commenced to a tropical Australian island. Christmas Island Air has commenced a weekly flight between Kuala Lumpur and Christmas Island chartering a Firefly B737-400 - Firefly is a subsidiary of Malaysian Airlines. The timing couldn't be better for Christmas Island, an Australian Territory located 300km to the south-west of the Indonesian Island of Java, having just featured in the television series the 'Best of Australia.' Being labeled as the 'Best of Australia' and featuring on cover of Australian Geographic has led to a significant increase in nature-lovers wanting to witness its amazing nature - the crab migration, the whalesharks, and the seabirds. Not to mention the boobies. See the baby one looking surprised, above.
Christmas Island's iconic Bird n' Nature Week in September could be the biggest ever. Then come November/December, the island comes alive (literally!) with the annual migration millions of red crabs which was recently named by Sir David Attenborough, as one of his top ten nature experiences of all time. All this and a welcome to majestic whalesharks, the world's biggest fish to our warm waters November - April. 'Discover the other side of Christmas Island' is the latest slogan.
