Australia's most beautiful beach

Lucky Bay's sparkling white beach and turquoise waters is enough to win everyone's heart. The wide sheltered bay is a must see and a great place to enjoy water-based activities.

It was discovered in rather interesting circumstances. Whilst exploring the south coast of what is now Western Australia, in 1802, explorer Matthew Flinders sailed a dangerous route through the Recherche Archipelago, east of Esperance.

He named Lucky Bay when his vessel HMS Investigator took shelter from a summer storm. While there, his botanist Robert Brown explored a diverse and largely unknown flora, discovering and naming many new species. Enjoy a walk along the beach to a lookout where a plaque celebrates this historic event.

The sheltered bay is ideal for swimming, snorkelling, fishing, surfing and launching small boats. But be aware that these beaches are notoriously treacherous for vehicles and it is easy to become bogged in the most innocent looking wet or dry sand. Lucky Bay's white sands are so pure and clean that they squeak undr your feet. It's like walking on table salt!

And if you just can't tear yourself away (either from the view or these new furry friends!) there a picturesque camping area overlooking the bay. Camping fees apply, but you can get here by regular two-wheel drive cars.
