Those were the Days

There's the joke that if you can remember the sixties, you weren't really there. Or you weren't having enough fun. For those who missed them - too young, too busy, too engrossed in it all - finally there is photographic evidence of the decade we shouldn't forget.

This photographic coffee table book recalls Australian life in the 1960's; the Vietnam War and the conscription lottery; the Swinging Sixties, the loss of a Prime Minister by drowning; the excitement of Kings Cross; the building of the iconic Opera House; the advent of decimal currency; Aboriginal recognition and the changing social patterns, and the new frontiers in Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland, with the mineral boom and new towns appearing in the desert. The kaleidoscopic images are in both colour and black-and-white and are juxtaposed to emphasise the differences that emerged during this exciting decade of change. This is a beautifully designed book that combines rich photography with nostalgic historical information about the decade.

The authors are well qualified to put this collection together. Not only did they experience the sixties but Ron has been taking photographs for over 60 years, starting as a cadet photographer at the Newcastle Morning Herald and later was Head of Department in the School of Fine Arts at the NCAE (now University of Newcastle). He has a PhD (University of Wollongong), an MA in Graphic Design (University of Central England, UK) and a Dip.Art and has exhibited widely and is the co-author of fifteen books.

Elizabeth Morrison has a BA DipEd (Dist) from the University of Newcastle and has taught Professional and Media Writing in the School of Communications at Charles Sturt University. Elizabeth has written the text for five photographic books and recently a book on commonly confused words, The Right Word.

Australia in the Sixties will make an ideal nostalgic Christmas gift for people who lived through it, or an eye-opening one for those who did not.

Those Were the Days: Australia in the Sixties, by Ron & Elizabeth Morrison, Exisle Publishing, 2013, paperback, $39.99, ISBN 978-1-921966-07-1
