101 Best Australian Beaches |
Which Australian beach is made entirely of shells, millions of them, several metres deep?
Which beach has the biggest waves?
Where is the world's largest sand island?
Where do loggerhead turtles come to lay their eggs?
And why does Australia have the best beaches on the planet? This book answers all of those questions and more. Between them, authors Andy Short and Brad Farmer have visited every one of Australia’s 11,761 mainland beaches on Australia's 30 000-kilometre coast, making them uniquely qualified to tell us which are the ones we have to see before we die. This superbly illustrated and thoroughly researched book will make you want to start the journey right now. Professor Andrew Short OAM is widely regarded as the world’s foremost authority on beaches, and Brad Farmer has spent a lifetime exploring the best beaches – and doing everything he can to protect them. It took Andy 14 years in total to investigate every beach. Brad has been to every accessible beach travelling over the past 30 years. Both authors have been researching the coast all their lives - collectively that’s over 80 years! Many beaches were revisited many times over, as well as hundreds more on offshore islands. Both of authors are keen surfers who have been travelling the coastline in search of a break since they were teenagers. To dselect the best beachesm they looked at every beach and at the factors that make them special – the views, the sand, surf, bordering headlands and a range of supporting amenities. They looked for the best natural experiences, but also for great city beaches and for those with fascinating historical or human stories. And then they sat down and debated which of the thousands of wonderful beaches should make the final cut.
