The Philosophy of Travel

Surely one of the grandest books to be published recently, Carlisle Roger's book spans several genres, as does his career as publisher, TV host of 4WD Touring Australia, and of course, photographer.

So all at once this book fills the role of art book, fine enough for public display, and a record of Australia's more remote and less accessible places. Unless, that is, you have a 4WD which brings us to the book's final role, that of tempting readers with the places to which ony a rugged all-terrain vehicle allows people to explore.

Author, Carlisle Rogers, quite obviously loves the outback of Australia and has set out in this book to share its beauty and wonder in such a way as to make it almost impossible to put the book down without wanting to hop behind the wheel and go and see this land for yourself.

The stunning colour plates throughout the book are each worthy of framing and hanging on a wall, and there are over a hundred of them, partnered by essays and fitting quotes from other travellers, other writers, that gives them background and depth.

Whether desert, river, lake or ocean, forest or some quirky outback pub, the colours and vibrancy of this country has possibly never been better showcased. An ode to exploration and discovery this work is the result of '100,000 kilometres of travel on dusty, muddy road, late night highway miles and the roadhouses, sunsets, waves, strangers and friends that have pushed me, challenged me and kept me looking for beauty in every direction,' says Carlisle Rogers.

The Philosophy of Travel, by Carlisle Rogers, published by Escape Media, 2016, clothbound hardcover with slipcase, rrp AU$69.95, ISBN: 978 099444 8910.
