Let's hope you have a good hundred years left to work your way through this very thick book! Organised geographically and with more that 800 colour photographs, just picking your next few places to visit would take a while. Well-travelled readers may have already ticked off some of the more typical tourist destinations such as Westminster Abbey, the Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China, but everyone will still find something to add. Five thousand-year-old Skara Brae, a Stone Age village on Orkney, has possibly slipped your travel plans. Or how about the Panama Canal, or the magical Palace of Mysore, or New Zealand's Larnach Castle? This book was edited by noted historian Richard Cavendish who, in collaboration with UNESCO, brought together the writings of 41 experts in various fields and regions around the world. A massive task - almost a life's work in itself - this book is worth a spot on your coffee table, to be regularly picked up and dreamed over. But we should all keep a notepad at hand, too, because this has been designed more than anything as a motivation to plan our future travels.
