A new star in beachside Avalon's dining crown is Yoda Food, specialising in the streetfood of South-East Asia. This casula, laid-back place suits the Avalon scene, and the wonderful aromas leaking out into the street are bringing in diners by the dozen. It helps too that is opposite the cinema and open late.
The tempting wide-open front and moody lighting are reminders of steamy nights in any of a number of Asian countries. Chef Brendan Brady, who owns the restaurant with partner Michelle Ring, melds Burmese, Singaporean, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisines. Soul food, as he calls it. The couple have spent many years in Hong Kong and Singapore and have returned with their tastebuds attuned and pockets full (it seems) of authentic recipes.
The decor reflects the heritage of the dishes and the quirky, relaxed ambience.
Bookings are not necessary, although with its increasing popularity, the place is often packed in the evenings. In fact this has been the most recent turn of events at Yoda, with the coffee-and-kaya toast breakfasts being superceded by evening dining.
As you can see the servings are ultra-generous, and they are well-priced, beautiful to look at and cheerfully delivered by the friendly staff. Best idea is to oirder and share - Asian-style, allowing more choices - because they're worth it.
Other dishes include salt and pepper calamari bites, fresh pork rolls, betel leaves with crab, and rendang. This green papaya salad was exquisite, fragrant with kaffir lime leaves, and served with crisply decadent deep-fried pork belly slices. Heaven!
