Bistrot Gavroche

Sydney is not short of dining places, yet the search is always on for new locations. Inner-city space is always highly coveted, and so Chippendale's Kensington Street has now gathered the ideal eclectic mix of small restaurants featuring local and international cuisine.

One of the best, which we visited very recently is Bistrot Gavroche with acclaimed former Singapore chef, Frederic Colin, at the helm. Called after a street urchin in the novel, Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo, the bistro's very-French name is a good fit for the laneway location of this eating quarter of the city.

The occasion for our visit was a special Bastille Day lunch, but the regular menu is rich with offerings such as this.

And yes, there are snails, Burgundy escargots baked in their shells with parsley and garlic butter. Mai oui!

Pate en croute too, but not just any recipe - the one Chef Colin uses is his Grandpa Henri's own creation. In celebration of Chef Frederic’s roots, the menu pays homage to many recipes from his youth when he cooked in his grand père Henri’s restaurant and kitchen from the tender age of 10.

Add in an array of classic dishes that capture the Parisian spirit and a wine list with a mix of both French and Australian wines hand-selected by sommelier, general manager and co-owner Lionel Richard, and you’ve got the buzz of Paris in the heart of Sydney.

While open for lunch and dinner on weekdays, a weekend brunch menu featuring egg dishes and traditional French favourites through to shared desserts, is also popular. Bottomless sparkling rosé accompanies the entire brunch that is available Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am to 3pm.
