Delicious news! The 27th of February marks Japan's National Strawberry Day, with still a little time to appreciate this heart-shaped fruit, cherished by many.
A little-known secret about this tasty fruit is that some of the best strawberries in the world are found in Shizuoka, Japan.
Renowned for their sweetness, size, and culture - prioritising quality over quantity - Shizuoka’s strawberries are just another reason to add Japan to your 2023 travel bucket list.
With the strawberry season running from January to May, National Strawberry Day is the perfect time to plan a trip to the Shizuoka countryside to pick and try some of the world’s finest strawberries.
Start your Shizuoka trip with a strawberry-picking tour! With over 50 strawberry farms in Shizuoka, and many offering an all-you-can-pick-and-eat experience, a tour is a great way to try the unique regional strawberry species like Beni-Hoppe, Akihime, and Kirapika. For a grand experience, check out the Ema Strawberry Picking Centre, the largest Strawberry farm in Shizuoka.
Once you're satisfied with juicy strawberries, head over to the Gotemba Premium Outlets. Containing over 200 stores, you can shop to your heart's content against the backdrop of the stunning Mt. Fuji. When cruising through the picturesque Shizuoka countryside, make sure you take in the natural wonders like the Shiraito Falls and Kawazu Seven Waterfalls or pay your respects at the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Tausha Shrine.
