Green tea secrets |
In Japan, May 1 marks a day completely devoted to green tea - Green Tea Day! According to the International Institute of Sustainable Development, green tea is the second most consumed drink in the world and is loved for both its delicious flavour and health benefits.
You may know that, BUT did you know that the world's finest green tea comes from Shizuoka Prefecture located on the South Coast of Japan, home to the world-famous and World Heritage-listed site, Mt. Fuji.
But don't let a mere volcano eclipse the importance of that tea!
The Shizuoka Prefecture produces 40 percent of Japan's green tea due to an ideal harvesting climate and high-quality practices within their tea-picking farms.
HERE are some fun facts about Shizuoka’s incredible green tea:
1. Not just a pretty face, Mt. Fuji is a vital part of Shizuoka’s green tea production. Such flavourful and aromatic green tea is thanks to the mineral-rich water and soil surrounding the mountain.
2. Many of the green tea plantations in the Prefecture have some of the best views of Mt. Fuji in Shizuoka - giving multiple reasons to visit!
3. Green tea is often free, and served like water in restaurants in Shizuoka.
4. Green tea is not just for drinking. Some restaurants serve dishes using green tea leaves including tea noodles and tea tempura.
5. Shizuoka green tea is immediately steamed after being hand-picked which means it has a stronger green colour and freshness than Chinese green tea.
Need another reason to add Shizuoka to your travel lists? When you visit the region, you will also find the perfect opportunity to have a first-hand experience of the world’s finest green tea.
Visitors can choose from tea picking at a traditional green tea farm, enjoying a tea ceremony in a traditional tea house, making their own blended green tea, or experiencing one of the many 'tea cafes' or green tea-themed treats that can be found in the Shizuoka Prefecture.
