Eccles Cakes These delicious fruit-filled pastries are unique to Lancashire in the north of England. Basically this is puff pastry filled with fruit mincemeat (which long ago really did contain some meat!). Once the fruit has been enclosed, the pastry is rolled out almost flat so that some of the fruit bursts through the surface. So addictive are they that they were probably used in celebrations. The Puritans banned the eating of them at religious festivals. Those spoilsports also banned dancing on the village green at Eccles (no doubt where the cakes originated), so there you are! Of course the locals kept on enjoying them at 'wakes' or festivals. In the 19th century Bradburn's was known as 'the Old Original Eccles Cake Shop' claiming it was where Eccles cakes were first made. They were made for and sold at Wardle's shop too. Similar cakes in England are: oval Banbury cakes from Oxfordshire, large Hawkshead ones from the Lake District, triangular godcakes from Warwickshire and Coventry (only on New Year's Day and Easter) and Chorley cakes which are sometimes rectangular.
