Cornwall & Devon - things to do |
The annual Clovelly Herring Festival on the beautiful Hartland Peninsula in North Devon will be held on Sunday 18th November, brings fish lovers together in a bid to help conserve dwindling fish stocks in British waters and help to safeguard the livelihoods of fishermen in the South West. Celebrating the King of fishes, the herring, once the Silver Darling and staple economy of Clovelly, the festival helps to promote neglected, but great-tasting species with shanty songs, tales of the sea, a fish filleting competition, demonstrations of fishing skills and crafts, plus tastings of herring specialities from around the Northern hemisphere, washed down with local Devon cider and beer. The Hartland Peninsula in North Devon comprises 17,000 acres of stunning scenery designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Falmouth Oyster Festival, 11th-14th October 2012, celebrates the start of the oyster dredging season, the diversity and quality of Cornish Seafood and in particular, one of the last remaining traditional oyster fisheries, dredging by sail and hand punt. Each year, a cookery master-class from a celebrity chef, followed by a book signing opens the festival. Packed with cookery demonstrations by leading local chefs, oysters, seafood, wine and local ale, children's shell painting, sea shanties, a town parade, and live music, an oyster shucking competition, a Falmouth Working Boat race and marquees brimming with Cornish produce; the festival is a must for all oyster, seafood and maritime heritage enthusiasts! Falmouth Oyster Festival has seen an increasing number of Cornish food and drink producers promoting their quality produce alongside the longstanding craft fair stalls in the festival marquee. Festival visitors can savour the expanding range of mouth watering Cornish food and drink, both on site whilst taking in the festival atmosphere or to take home and enjoy!
Now in its third year, The Rock Oyster Festival, on the banks of Cornwall's Camel Estuary from June 22-24, is a family-orientated food, music and arts festival held in celebration of the oyster and all that is good about fresh seafood. Held in the grounds of Dinham House near Rock, north Cornwall, the festival will showcase some of the county's best food and chefs, with two acclaimed headline music acts already confirmed. Event organiser Charlie Anderson said: "The Rock Oyster Festival is all about celebrating the delicious seafood and top quality produce we have here in Cornwall. We are making these amazing foods accessible to everyone with all the chefs creating at least one dish for £5." New for 2012 is the addition of a chefs' theatre, where some of Cornwall's most talented chefs will demonstrate the best ways to cook with seafood.
LOBSTER CATCH & COOK WEEKENDS (April to end-Sept) at The Lugger, Cornwall With its fabulous harbour-side spot in Cornwall's pretty Portloe, it's no surprise that The Lugger and its AA Rosette Restaurant specialize in fresh fish and seafood - a highlight that is now the focus of a brand new weekend experience. Over two nights guests can hole up in this most idyllic Cornish bolt-hole and, early one morning join local fisherman, James, as he sails the waters of the beautiful Roseland Peninsular, pulling up parlour-pots and checking for crab and lobster along the way. Then it's onto the rods for some sea bass and mackerel before heading back to harbour, armed with a fresh and slippery catch. Back in The Lugger's kitchen, guests are joined by the Head Chef and taught how to prepare, cook and dress their very own-caught Lobster, which is served up on the sunny terrace, high above the sea, with a delicious bottle of Muscadet. This is a most enlightening and authentic catch and cook experience, allowing guests to get to grips with Cornwall's most prized fruit - the lobster - and experience the challenges and fun of sea fishing as well as how tasty the rewards can be!
