Black Sea to the Baltic

A small-group fully-escorted tour through the former Soviet Republics of the Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia will visit attractions as varied as the Crimean Peninsula battlefield of the infamous 1894 'Charge of the Light Brigade,' part of 2500km of tunnels in which Soviet partisans sought refuge during their fight against the Nazi invasion in WW II, Europe's oldest National Park, and extraordinary palaces, art galleries and castles that contrast with quaint traditional wooden rural buildings.

There are also visits to the theatre from whose balcony in 1939 Hitler proclaimed Anschluss (incorporation of Lithuania into Germany) to crowds in the square below, the palace in which Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin's Yalta Conference was held to discuss post-war reorganisation of Europe, a visit to Brest and it's Fortress where the first battles of Operation Barbarossa were fought, a walk down the famous Potemkin steps that featured in the 1925 film Battleship Potemkin, 120kms of 15th century tunnels 100 metres deep that now house 1.25m bottles of rare wines and wine tasting rooms, and an unusual 17th Century pharmacy museum.

Some of the historical hotels used during the tour include the Hotel Europe in Minsk, which dates back to 1841 when it was deemed 'the finest in Eastern Europe,' and the baroque and gothic-styled Stiklaia Hotel in Vilnius, which was home to glassblowers and other craftsmen in the 15th and 16th centuries - and by contrast a visit to the Thomas Mann Museum and Paneriai - an infamous Nazi 'death camp' near Vilnius that is now a memorial and museum.
