Sri Lanka's latest luxury hotel |
Where trade winds carried legendary explorers like Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta and Fa-Hsien past Sri Lanka's soaring southern cliffs on some of history's most celebrated nautical journeys, October 1st, 2014, marked the opening of the most anticipated resort yet along this fabled island's palm fringed shores.
An array of international dining venues captures Weligama's iconic sunsets. Dining options include an intimate cliff-edge teppanyaki pavilion seating just twelve guests; an alfresco Sri Lankan restaurant set under the canopy of a giant kumbuk tree; and a festive dining pavilion where guests interact with chefs to select fresh seafood at the “Pola” (Market). Dining in the pavilion offers guests’ insight into the produce of Sri Lanka’s unique cuisine with seafood displayed on stylised boat hulls in reclaimed wood and on traditional street foot trollies, all warmly lit by antique lanterns and festoon lamps.
Other resort highlights include a 60-metre crescent-shaped cliff-top infinity pool and a beachside Dive Centre that also offers whale watching in Cape Weligama’s 10-passenger speedboat.
Thirty minutes east of Galle, Cape Weligama inhabits 12 manicured acres atop a singular promontory rising 36 metres above the Indian Ocean. Stunning panoramas naturally complement all 40 private retreats designed by one of Asia's most celebrated architects, Lek Bunnag.
Founders of this hotel is the Fernando family, of Dilmah Tea fame. Theopening of Cape Weligama follows the success of iconic sister hotel Ceylon Tea Trails, offering the perfect complement of ‘Tea and Sea’.
