Serendip Island beckons |
Never heard of Serendip? It's the island where mythical sailors once made chance and wonderful discoveries. Today we call this place Sri Lanka, but the discoveries are still there to happen upon and enjoy. Colombo, the capital, is transforming rapidly into a modern bustling cosmopolitan city. Some of the old colonial buildings have gone, but many are being preserved to blend into the modern city. Take a walk or join one of the many walking tours to find out more for yourself.
The Kandy Perehera is world-renowned and takes place from the 4th to 15th August this year. A lesser-known yet still colourful Perehera takes place in February to coincide with the February Full Moon Poya day.
Sri Lanka is a blend of colours, culture and tradition. Elaborate processions (or Perahera) with ornately-dressed dancers, musicians, fire eaters and majestic elephants catch the eye (and cameras) of locals and foreigners alike.
But there is more to Sri Lanka than the city. Surf's up! and surfers are taking to the beaches of Mirissa in the south and Aurgambay on the east coast. Best surfing season in Mirissa is from February to April, and June to October in Arugambay. Learn more about this serendipitous island here.... |
