Festival of the Tooth, Kandy |
Sri Lanka's Esala Perahera (the Festival of the Tooth), is perhaps the most spectacular religious procession in Asia. Taking place in the medieval city of Kandy, it commences on Esala Full Moon Day on 19th July 2012 and lasts for ten days. As each day passes the drama of the nightly procession increases culminating on the last night with in one hundred or more caparisoned, robed and illuminated elephants majestically taking part with the custodians and other officials dressed in the traditional Sinhalese attire of chieftains riding them.
The sound of blowing conch shells and whip cracking starts off the excitement of the approaching Kandy Perahera. Fire eaters and flame throwers, acrobats, jugglers and whip crackers, standard bearers, Kandyan dancers and drummers, flautists, dance and sing with the smell of burning coconut oil lingering the air, whilst the boom of cannon fire to notify the timing of the procession resonates over Kandy. The centre of attraction is the Maligawa Tusker which carries the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha with is kept in the Kandy temple (known as the temple of the Tooth).
Reef Villa & Spa on the south-west coast at Wadduwa, suggest you either stay overnight at Kandy, if you wish to attend each day of the Perahera then travel down to by either helicopter or private car, or, fly to Kandy for the day by helicopter from Reef Villa & Spa, stay overnight and fly back again by helicopter if it is only one night of the Perahera you wish to see.
