Singapore's Supertrees |
Prepare yourself for trees as you have never seen them. Singapore's town planners have never been known to hold back where there's an artistic statement to be made, but here at the latest addition to the city – Gardens by the Bay – they have gone completely over the top.
Located bayside at Marina Bay even the names of the various parts of the gardens sound inviting. The Cloud Forest, Supertree Grove, Flower Dome, and Dragonfly and Kingfisher Lakes just make you want to come and see for yourself. It's been a seven year project and the gardens cover 54 hectares. Perhaps most startling are the Supertrees, towering 25-50-metre garden-trees, 'avatars', created with four parts: reinforcement concrete core, trunk, planting panels of the living skin, and canopy. The 11 Supertrees are embedded with environmentally sustainable functions like photovoltaic cells to harvest solar energy and glow with a light and sound display at night. Over 162,900 plants comprising more than 200 species and varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns and tropical flowering climbers are planted on the Supertrees.
