It’s controversial. Some of the very experienced say it’s all in the bloodline, whilst others swear by a diet heavy in carrots, but whatever the secret to training a racing yabbie is, there are plenty of folk that will be trying their luck at this year’s 10th annual Moonie Yabbie Races. A yabby, for those who have never encountered this strange species of crustacean, is a freshwater crayfish. The history of the races goes like this: in November 2006 a few locals gathered around the Moonie Sports Club and thought the idea of racing a few local crustaceans might be the morale booster the local farming families needed. Little did they realise, that 10 years on, it would be part of the legacy of Moonie. With less than 150 local residents and more 400km west of the coast of Queensland, Australia, these fast little yabbies are still attracting tourists from afar for a day on the punt.
Last year, 2015, marked a whole decade of yabby racing and Saturday 28th November was the day everyone in town plus many visitors, turned out for another huge day at the race track!
