The Highlander Tour from Food Trail Tours travels up the Kuranda Range, across the Atherton Tablelands to Mareeba, Tolga, Atherton and Yungaburra, before returning to Cairns via the Gilles Hwy and Gordonvale. Join a day of discovery sampling tasty treats and visiting family farms to follow the food journey from ground - to table! Travel off the beaten tourist track, tour coffee and macadamia plantations, taste tropical fruit wines, and visit a cheese and chocolate factory. Experience exotic tastes and uncover secrets even locals don't know.
You also see the sights as you travel across the dry plains, red soils, rolling hills, and into the Cairns Highlandss' lush Wet Tropics Rainforest, visiting Atherton, Mareeba, Lake Barrine and the enormous Twin Kauri Pines. Coffee Plantation See the coffee bushes growing, the processing equipment and coffee roaster. Hear the story behind the coffee, from the ground to delicious coffee in the cup. Step back in time as you meet hard working migrants, who came here in the 1950's. Morning Tea, is served at the coffee plantation. Tropical Fruit Winery You visit De Bruey's Tropical fruit winery, near Mareeba. A tasting of selected wines is provided. The winery produces tropical fruit wines, port style wines. They also produce tropical creams and a coffee liqueur.
Macadamia plantation (not open to the public) Learn about the evolution of the macadamia industry from the wild Australian rainforest nut, to what we grow and eat today. See how they grow, harvest and process macadamias, at the farm. Taste Natural, Salted, Honey, Hickory and Wasabi flavoured Macadamias. Lunch at The Tolga Pub. A scrumptious tropical seafood lunch, with local produce, is provided. Special dietary needs can be catered for.
Gallo Dairyland Gaze into the cheese factory, where cheese makers ply their craft. Hear the story behind the cheeses, from dairy to table. View the chocolate making room. Taste a selection of cheeses and chocolate. The Curtain Fig Tree. A 500-year-old strangler fig nestled among the World Heritage, Wet Tropics Rainforest. This 'Mabi Rainforest' takes its name from the aboriginal word for the tree kangaroo.
Lake Barrine Take a short walk to the enormous 1000-year-old Twin Kauri Pine. Enjoy Devonshire tea, on the veranda of the teahouse, overlooking Lake Barrine. |
