The Scent of a Dollar

scentofmoneyThe most important gift Mark Sheehan's father gave to him was a pair of un-hockable hand-crafted sterling silver cufflinks. It was a strange thing for a dad to give to a nine-year-old, but neither of them knew at the time that Mark's millionaire father was about to die. And what the family also soon discovered was that he had no life insurance.

It turned out that Sheehan's cuff-links could not be redeemed for money - which the family soon came to need urgently - because they were engraved with a strange anagram. YCDBSOYA.

If this sounds like the stuff of a thriller plot - in a way it is. Sheehan has turned his lifelong entrepreneurial history and quest for a better, and then an even better, way to make a dollar into an absorbing tale that is not only entertaining but also hugely inspiring. You see, those cryptic initials on the cuff-links stood for the core of Sheehan senior's business philosophy: You Can't Do Better Sitting on Your Ass!

Fast forward several decades and we have this book, subtitled "How I turn every day into a business opportunity" in which Mark Sheehan sets about decoding the success of the many businesses he has founded or set on the path to wealth. Appropriately, each chapter finishes with a Cash Register summary of the key to the success of that particular venture.

Sheehan's career is a thrilling success story, but apart from setting an inspiring example, he has an additional endearing characteristic - it's obvious Mark Sheehan happily and generously wants to share the secrets of his success.

In fact, after reading and absorbing the guidelines in this book, you might be inclined to spell that the $ecret$ of your own $ucce$$.

If ever a book should 'go platinum', this is it!

The Scent of a Dollar, Mark Sheehan, New Holland Publishers, 2010, paperback, rrp $24.95.

Perhaps the best thing I've done in the past 30 years, is to have stood up in front of college audiences, and spoke about can-be dreams...this mob unleashed dreams and aspirations enough to fill Yankee stadium a few times over with power. I'll keep speaking, as long as campuses keep asking! Thanks for the wide-open-window... Mark Sheehan

Feedback is worth a fortune, so Thank You to 'Stephanie' who took the time to write nice things... The entire idea of the book was to reach out beyond my own sphere of friends and peers to a wider group that like,me might also have dreams and ideas they've yet to take flight. I hope my book helps heaps of good people lift the landing gears!

This is such a great book. It is heartwarming, wise and practical all in one. While many such books are full of generalisation and grand ideas, Mark's is full of wisdom learned through doing, and practical 'get started' ideas of how to start out small and how those principals are the same when you are making it big. I have loved it and am buying copies for the friends of our teenage kids who are starting out themselves.
