If you live in an English-speaking country, you may wonder what use there is for a Portuguese phrasebook. That small black and white ball on the cover of this book may give a clue. And even if you only plan to follow the Fútebol (aka the World Cup - to be held in Brazil later this year) it will still help to decode some of the words that will almost certainly slip into the TV commentary. Unlike many phrase books, this one is written in a fun and approachable style. Almost immediately on opening it, you'll see there's a run down on 'quick and dirty Portuguese pronunciation' closely followed by a chapter that equates to Soccer in Brazil 101: what it means to the locals, where the games will be played, and associated terms and phrases. There's even a section with stats on all the competing countries. The remainder of the book deals with the various venues away from the stands - parties, romantic places, shopping, eating spots and food, and after hours locations. And because this is a book to take with you in your pocket or backpack, there is plenty of the local vernacular, too. Slang, tough and rough language, and all sorts of terms for any occasion - no holds barred. Very soon you'll be able to cheer and heckle, flirt and have fun, as well as buy a round of drinks and celebrate. Just like a local. It's easy to see that the team of active, sport-loving authors have endeavored to provide phrases for almost any occasion or situation. This year is offering the whole world a party - one that only Brazil could deliver. So if you want to be really part of it, then you'll just have to know the language.
