My Summer of '69

A touching and true story of travel in the 1960s. Read on for the flip-side of a time that was not always as carefree and joyous as it should have been. Author Penelope Gardiner tells it her own way:

Mark Sheehan, a friend of hers, describes the era:

'In 1969 America put a Man on the Moon, I was #7 Draft Choice for the VietNam War and my home state of New York hosted a tiny little concert in the Catskill Mountains  which would be later known around the world,  as 'Woodstock'...

... It was a time when we could stick out a thumb at the side of the road and find a ride anywhere in the world.

This memoir  smiles on the surface, simmers in the middle and shocks me to the skin at the ending.
It's far more than a travel missive: It's the memoir of a young woman who lights-out for the UK and Europe from a farmstead in New Zealand. 'Penny'  lands in a film with Robert Redford, is adopted in fairy-tale fashion by Royals and falls madly in love with a handsome rogue in Spain.

It's a picture-postcard tale with shocking, and oftentimes hidden riptides sucking the reader away from the reality under the narrative.

The 'love of her life' abused Penelope physically and mentally for over a decade, and she like thousands of other women worldwide, kept 'silent', thinking it was 'all her fault ~ something she'd done to deserve the black eyes, broken ribs and beatings.

The story is bi-polar: charmed and chipper on one page, black-eyed and bruised the next...

It took great courage for Penny to finally run for her life, and to flee with her two young sons. She ran with just the suitcases she could carry...

Sadly, Not enough people will read this memoir...but everyone should.
